Migraine is a severe headache that can last 4 to 72 hours. It is accompanied by sensitivity to lights and sounds, nausea, vomiting, pounding pain on one side of the head around the temple area. In some cases it may affect both sides of the head. Some people have so-called warning signs, or auras, before the migraine strikes. Auras may include flashes of light, blind spots and tingling in arms and/or legs. Auras can happen a day or a few hours before migraine starts. There is no cure for migraines. In fact, doctors don’t really know what causes them. However, there are medications that can provide migraine relief.

Doctors have been researching severe migraines for a long time and have been able to create a list of things that can trigger migraines. Genetics and environment play a big role in whether a person gets migraines or not. Hormonal changes, drop in estrogen to be exact, can cause a migraine. That’s why many women experience a migraine right before or during their menstrual period when estrogen is low. Certain foods, like chocolate, Aspartame, beer and red wine, aged cheese, too much caffeine, monosodium glutamate, salty foods and processed foods can trigger migraine headaches. Stress is a common cause. Many college students report migraines around important test times. Bright lights, strong smells, both pleasant and unpleasant ones, can be triggers. Lack of sleep, physical exhaustion, environmental changes, such as barometric pressure changes, and medications can provoke migraines.

There are medications that provide migraine relief and those designed to prevent it. Pain relieving medications include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Advil, Motrin, and combinations, such as Exedrine Migraine, can help with less severe forms of migraines. Triptans are medications for severe headaches. They help relieve pain, nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Ergotamine is a drug that is very effective for long-lasting migraines. Combination of a sedative butalbital and acetaminophen or aspirin provides migraine relief but have a high risk of rebound headaches. Medications containing narcotics, such as codeine, are used sometimes to treat migraines but because opiates are habit forming, they are used only when other medicines are ineffective.

Write it Down?

Many people who suffer from migraines also have triggers which contribute to the headaches. When exposed to these triggers, a migraine can start instantly, or shortly following exposure. You can get migraine relief by figuring out your triggers using a headache journal. Write down all food eaten that day and how you feel after. If you have any food triggers, you will begin to see a pattern, such as getting a migraine shortly after drinking alcohol or eating chocolate.

There are many items that act as "triggers" to form migraine headaches. These triggers can be food items, supplements, etc. Do a web search for migraine triggers to learn what items you may be taking that cause migraines. I learned that chocolate, caffeine, certain pollens, etc all contributed to my migraines. Some others are red wine, red meat, many liquors, many cheeses. Do the search to compare against the supplements you are taking.
