Like most states in the United States, Nevada has enacted minimum liability insurance laws, which outline the minimum level of coverage you must have in order to be a a legal driver in the state. Las Vegas drivers must hold at least minimum liability insurance when driving a motor vehicle on public roads in Nevada.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles' (DMV) Insurance Verification Program (IVP) is a unique monitoring and identification program that works closely with the DMV. Most insurance vendors and providers allow DMV access to their records so that they can confirm drivers with valid insurance policies. If a driver's insurance coverage provider indicates that driver has dropped their insurance policy, they will be asked to verify their auto insurance coverage. If a Las Vegas driver fails to provide proof of coverage within 20 days (either online or through the postal mail), his or her registration will be canceled and their license plates will be recalled. Subsequent registration renewal will be subject to a separate fine and proof of insurance will be required before the license plates can be re-issued.

Current minimum liability auto insurance requirements in Las Vegas, include the following:

$15,000 for bodily injury or death to one person involved in an accident

$30,000 for bodily injury or death to multiple persons involved in an accident

$10,000 for property damages

Las Vegas drivers are required to carry their proof of insurance in the vehicle and they must show it to an law enforcement officer when requested to do so.

In addition, Nevada drivers are subject to the tort system, which means that when an accident is your fault, you are responsible for the bodily injury and property damages inflicted on other parties. If your auto insurance coverage amounts do not provide enough funds, the injured party can sue you for additional financial remuneration.

Uninsured motorists are subject to a $250 fee in order to reinstate their suspended registration. This fee can be reduced significantly if the motorist has sufficient proof that the vehicle was not operated during the period the auto insurance lapsed, as in if it were in a repair shop for a significant amount of time.
