Few beaches on the East coast have become as popular as Myrtle Beach, which offers not only miles of pristine ocean front for beach lovers to enjoy, but also features dozens of attractions and hundreds of restaurants of every type.

Although many families have been traveling to Myrtle Beach, SC for years, the city and the it’s namesake beach are relatively new compared to other cities in the country.

Originally a local beach for loggers in the nearby city of Conway, the past thirty years have seen such explosive growth in popularity that the South Carolina destination is one of the most popular in the nation.

Arts and Entertainment

The most popular attraction in Myrtle Beach is, well, naturally, the beach itself. Stretching from Little River, which is just below the North Carolina border, to Georgetown, SC, the beach also encompasses the cities of North Myrtle Beach and Garden City. This beach is not marred by vehicles, pollution or heavy marine industry; horseback rides down the early morning sand are a common scene.

The heart of Myrtle Beach is most commonly considered to be the intersection of 9th Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, and that’s where the heaviest visitor population occurs, but just slightly south of this area is much easier to navigate.

Myrtle Beach features the outdoor shopping center, aptly named Broadway at the Beach, which is technically inland but is a uniquely constructed array of boardwalks linking together shops, restaurants, an IMAX theater and even Ripley’s Aquarium. The boardwalks stretch over wide water-filled channels, teeming with natural aquatic life, and ferry boat rides are available to travel among the boardwalks if you desire to take a leisurely voyage.

Ripley’s Aquarium features moving path walkways that travel underneath the massive tanks of beautiful fish, and even giant sharks can be seen swimming, safely but somewhat menacingly, overhead.

One of the unadvertised secrets of Myrtle Beach is that just off the main beach highway are dozens of miniature golf courses, with each one vying to be more elaborate than the last. Volcanos, pirate ships and the Loch Ness Monster are truly ’par for the course’.

Those looking for some live entertainment enjoy the stage shows of the Alabama Theater, named for the famous band who rose to prominence in the ’70’s and ’80’s and still enjoy the Myrtle Beach area.

Food and Drink

While there’s all options available in this vacation destination, the top choice is calabash seafood, and each of the sprawling buffets have fiercely loyal followings. Crabby Mike’s and Captain Benjamin’s both have vast amounts of table space to accommodate as many patrons as possible, but the food is sought after that at peak times, lines still stretch out the door.

Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle features several restaurants, including a House of Blues, but there are dozens of restaurants in Broadway at the Beach and all along highway 17, which runs parallel to the beach. Myrtle also has what so many beach goers crave while enjoying all that sun and sand: enough breakfast establishments to handle all of the hungry masses.

Myrtle Beach is more than a beach destination, and with beautiful beaches juxtaposed against comfortable rows of hotels, it’s easy to see why it’s enjoying such rapidly rising popularity.
