If you are using a new printer for the first time, you may not be familiar with what sort of cartridges work with the printer. Every printer prints with a specific printer cartridge series. Printer cartridge series are identified by the printer brand name, followed by a cartridge number.
First check with the brand of printer you use. I know with Lexmark and HP you can not refill your own cartridges because the printer will tell you it is empty and not read a new cartridge number and shut down not allowing you to print. The canon 210 ink cartridge should work for a canon printer that takes a 210 it will tell you on the inside of cover when you open it up to put the ink cartridge in there. Do not know otherwise because I do not know what kind of printer you have.
1. Spread the newspapers over your entire work area. Place the paper towels within close reach. Put the used ink cartridge upright on the newspapers and open the ink refill kit. 2. Place any unused ink back into the bottle for later use. 7. Wipe off the ink cartridge and place it back into the printer.8Leave the ink cartridge in the printer for at least 24 hours before using. This allows the sponge inside the cartridge to become evenly saturated with the ink.

In this case you should go into the printer properties and set it for black and white printing or grey scale printing. Some colour printers have an interchangeable cartridge.
