A nephrology nurse must have knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology; diagnosis and treatment of renal replacement therapy; pharmacology and pharmacotherapy; nutrition; counseling skills; teaching skills; research; rehabilitation; and palliative care related to death and dying.
A nephrology nurse is responsible for coordinating patient care with other medical team members including dialysis technicians and doctors. They teach patients and families about the disease, their risk factors and treatments. They are a patient advocate and help the patient make informed decisions about their course of treatment. They analyze a patient’s progress.
