An operations analyst uses math skills to develop methods to synthesize information so that policies can be created and companies can be run more efficiently. Their analysis helps managers make better decisions and more creatively and effectively solve problems.

Nearly every industry employs operations analysts. Operations analysts decrease the complexity of industry problems so that the problems can come into better focus and solutions can become clearer to managers.

Typically operations analysts work in an office setting, but they may go out into the field to gather data.

Operations analysts begin by listening to a manager describing a problem. They set about gathering data to clarify the problem. The analyst then develops a model, which not only elucidates the various components of the problem but also the relationships between the components. The models can then be used to simulate outcomes of various approaches and strategies for solving problems.

Based on their examination, the analysts then make recommendations to the managers. Sometimes the managers will request additional models and simulations taking new factors or conditions into account.

This position often works in a team setting.

Some of the problems operations analysts’ works on solving are space utilization, equipment utilization and staffing patterns, but any operational dilemma is a possible topic for this position to solve. For example, airlines often have operations analysts develop their flight schedules.

Salary

The median salary for operations analysts is about $51,000 annually. Starting salary is typically in the $40s.

Traits

Candidates for jobs in this field need to have the following traits or characteristics: ability to understand and carry out instructions; communication skills; ability to draw inferences; higher level quantitative skills; work cooperatively; ability to produce coherent written reports; detail oriented; and enjoy working with technology.
