What exactly is Organic Gardening? Simply put, it means to grow anything from flowering plants to fruits and vegetables without the use any type of synthetic product like pesticides or fertilizers. The ideal organic garden replenishes the resources it uses. This can be done by feeding the soil with the composted plants that were grown in that soil. All in all, organic gardening means growing in cooperation with nature and the environment.

The Basics of Organic Gardening

There are two major facets to organic gardening. One is the soil. “Feed the soil and the soil will feed the plants.” Plants get everything they need to grow from the soil, but some types of soil do not contain enough nutrients, and others don’t hold water well. That’s where organic matter or compost comes into the picture. Adding this to soil improves its ability to attract organisms that create nutrients. It also makes the texture better for holding water.

The second part of organic gardening is avoiding pesticides. Keep a close eye on plants for signs of pests and before you take any action, make sure they are harmful to the plants. If they are, act quickly and use organic pesticides.

Benefits of Eating Organic Food

While organically grown fruits and vegetables grow and produce slower than conventional gardening, they have more nutrition than the products of chemically grown plants, are loaded with not just vitamins and minerals, and are the best and most beneficial anti-stress substances for our health.

Growing inorganically will yield more produce because of the use of fertilizers and pesticides that are not organic, but they forfeit nutritional value. Not only are the fruits and vegetables grown less nutritional but they also have a negative effect on health because of the toxins used to grow them.

The American Journal published a study that showed that in the early 1990s less than 3 percent of the population had cancer, but by 1996 this number had jumped to 50 percent. Cases of asthmas have nearly doubled since 1980. Scientists began to look for reasons for this and found that the huge drop off in overall health coincided with the fact that chemical farming began to replace organic farming during that time.
