The first thing the traveler should know when packing for a vacation is not to bring more than they need. When a traveler sees another traveler on line at the airport and they seem to have everything in their closet crammed into suitcases, duffels and trunks, they're looking at people who have brought too much junk. Most of the junk is going to remain unused and even unthought-of of for the duration of their trip.

First, the traveler must know what the weather will be like at their destination. Then, they should pick and lay out the appropriate items of clothing. The travel should take no more than two pairs of shoes, one dressy and one casual. If the traveler is going to a seashore destination, casual may mean a pair of flip-flops or sandals.

In the days before the trip, the traveler should write down everything they will need to take. This should be done over days and not at the last minute, as the traveler is not likely to remember everything at once. The traveler should write out an inventory of everything that they pack, then put the list in the suitcase. This is especially helpful for senior citizens. The clothing that will be worn on the last day should be placed in the suitcase first, and then the clothes layered on till the first day's clothing is on top.

The traveler should pack toilet paper, because there are a surprising number of places where it's not used. Toiletries should be put in a leak proof zip bag, then put in one of the suitcases or duffle's outside pockets.

The traveler should bring some entertainment, including a good, long book, if the trip is going to be long and tedious.

The traveler should know where the emergency services for their destination are located. This includes hospitals and drugstores. Lastly, they should relax and have a good time!
