There will be noticeable warnings that the air ducts in your home require some maintenance. Mold found on certain parts of the ceiling and or walls of your house, a certain increase in the amount of bugs found in your home or a decrease in the amount of air you can feel coming from your ventilation system can be signs that your air ducts need to be checked and or cleaned. It is suggested that most air duct systems within a home environment be checked and cleaned once a year at the minimum and up to once a season at maximum.
Certain tools and items are going to be essential to properly cleaning out an air duct. Check the screws that are involved with this procedure and make sure that you have the proper screwdriver available to remove the air duct during cleaning. Cleaning supplies, such as an old towel, bristle brush, vacuum cleaner, are going to be needed to clean the duct itself. Items for your own personal health will be needed as well, such as a good set of mechanic or cleaning gloves, ventilation mask and goggles.
Carefully remove all vent covers using the screwdriver and un-attach all air filters currently present. With the old towel or even a sponge, wash and clean the air duct accordingly to remove any buildup that may have occurred on the walls and or ceiling when the air duct connects with your home.
With an attachment securely fastened, vacuum deep into the air duct to make sure that no debris or buildup as seeped deep into the vent to avoid later blockage after the cleaning. Most vacuum come equipped with long attachments and if not can be purchase from any local hardware store.
Once the duct has been properly cleaned and vacuumed, the air filters, which at this time should be swapped out with replacements purchased from your local hardware store, can be put back into place and the vent covers can be put screwed properly back into place. At this point, you will use the vacuum to remove any dust buildup on the vents to provide proper ventilation for all air entering and leaving your home
