In the 60’s women burned them. The modern generation proudly show their straps and even the tips of the cups. Whether you love or hate your bra, you always want it to fit properly and comfortably. Bras that don’t fit right pinch, squeeze and do nothing to flatter your shape. To be sure that you are wearing the right size bra, follow these steps for measuring.

Band Size

The band size is the numerical part of the bra; typically 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 42. When the band size is too tight you will wind up with a bra that is uncomfortable, even painful to wear. Wrap the measuring tape around your rib cage, directly below the breasts. Be sure that the tape sits parallel to the ground all the way around your body. Force all air from your lungs and then take the measurement to the closest whole number. If your measurement is odd you should add 5 to it. If the measurement is even, add only 4. This will give you your band size.

Cup Size

This is the alpha portion of the bra size ranging from A to D, and then going into double and triple D’s and even E’s. The most common bra sizes are B, C and D. For this measurement, be sure that you are not wearing a padded bra. Stand straight and move the tape measure to the fullest part of your bust. The tape should be parallel to the ground and should not bind or feel overly tight. Any fraction should be rounded to the closest whole number.

Determining the Bra Size

Subtract your band size from the cup measurement. Each inch of difference typically equals one cup size. Therefore, if your band measurement is 33, with 5 added for the band size and your cup size is 39, then you would take 39-38. With a one inch difference your cup size would be an A, and your bra size would be 38A. If your cup size measured at 42, then the formula would be 42-38. The difference is 4, meaning you would require a 38D.

Once your cup size exceeds a D the measurement tips become less accurate. At this point, a meeting with a professional fitter is recommended. These consultations are typically offered free of charge at most department stores. All you have to do is ask the employee in the lingerie department if they have been trained in bra fittings and can assist you.
