There are many occupations within the area of biotechnology and one great example is the occupation of biological scientist. A biological scientist studies living things and their role in the environment in which they live. Research plays a large role in the daily work of a biological scientist. Please read on for more information about biological scientists and their work.

Usually, a biological scientist specializes in a particular area. For instance, a physiologist focuses his or her studies on plants and animals. They pursue research on topics such as the reproduction or growth of plants and animals. Alternatively, a biological scientist who specializes in aquatics narrows his or her studies to plants and animals that dwell in the water. A marine biologist may study the habits of whales and how they adapt to their environment. Microbiologists, ecologists, and zoologists are just a few other examples of specialties in Biology. All of these biologists deal with research, collecting data, and staying abreast of discoveries within the biotech world.

A person interested in becoming a biological scientist must prepare to dedicate him or herself to garnering many years of education. Many biological scientists who work with universities and colleges have a Ph.D. However, there are some teaching jobs within this field that only require a Master's or even a Bachelor's degree. Some biological scientists spend a lot of time working independently on research projects. Others join a team that is working on a large research project. A biological scientist must determine his or her most effective working environment. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the annual median salary (in May 2008) of biochemists and biophysicists was $82,840. The salary of biological scientists depends upon where the scientist works whether it is with a small company or in a university setting. The lower end of the annual salary range for these positions is approximately $44,320 as reported by the BLS. Some further examples of biotech jobs to consider are agricultural scientists, medical scientists, and scientists who research genetics. In short, an individual with a scientific mind has an array of biotech job options to choose from.
