Temporary employment is ideal for people who cannot or will not make a permanent commitment to a specific job. In many instances, employers use temporary employment to fill gaps in their employee coverage due to seasonal fluctuations within their companies. Temporary employees may also fill spots left vacant by employees on leave, vacation or who otherwise cannot fulfill their normal duties. Workers will find temporary positions in almost every field, including highly skilled positions, such as lawyers and Accountants and entry-level positions, such as mail room clerks and delivery people.

Some workers find employment directly with companies, while some will contract with an employment agency. The advantage of working through an employment agency is that they typically will have access to more positions than workers will find on their own. Agencies provide something of a screening service in organizing positions so that workers have a better idea of what to expect from each position. Employers that pay employment agencies may pay the worker a lower rate in consideration of the overall cost of the position to the company.

Temporary employment allows workers to gain a broad experience by working in different positions across different sectors. This experience is very valuable in highlighting a worker's strengths and weaknesses and provides a good basis when they look for permanent positions. Employers gain by hiring temporary workers who have built up their experiences in different environments because more experience helps workers to recognize and solve problems. Workers who do not expect to stay with one position permanently may experience less frustration while performing repetitive, dull or unpleasant tasks than their counterparts who hold permanent positions. The benefit for workers is that they will gain experience without burning out.

A drawback to temporary employment is that it does not offer long-term job security. Temporary workers also routinely receive fewer or none of the benefits that their permanent counterparts may enjoy. Employees may find that some employers treat them more strictly than they do permanent employees or supervise them closer out of a concern that temporary workers will not expend as much effort in their tasks because they do not fear any long-term repercussions for poor performance.
