Older homes might have basement areas that have seen better days and may be more difficult to remodel or update. You could be in for some nasty surprises when you start pulling down old ceilings or tearing out old walls. While this doesn’t mean you won’t want to continue with your plans for remodeling, it may be a good idea to go into the remodeling of an older basement with your eyes open and prepared for the unexpected and situations that might call for repairs and extra expenses.

Comfort

While a basement remodel might seem like a great idea in theory, sometimes newer isn’t always better. While a remodel job might increase the value of your home if you’re considering selling in the near future, a newer basement might not hold the appeal or memories for you as your old one did.

The older you get, the more you might notice that what was once considered retro, vintage, or outdated, often eventually comes back around to be considered popular again. Not only might your aging basement still appeal to your sentimental side, but it might now appeal to a younger generation who missed out on the fashions that were popular twenty-five or thirty years ago. If you enjoy your basement and aren’t planning to go anywhere soon, or have a well-kept space that might be coming back into fashion, a remodel could destroy that nostalgic appeal.
