It would depend on the gift and the intentions set behind said gift. If the gift is given with anything more than professional and friendly intentions then it is not very appropriate. But if you have had this trainer for a while and it happens to be the personal trainers birthday or a holiday then it is perfectly fine to give him/her a gift. By then you would have created a bond and there is nothing wrong with that.
