Social security is a program that was started in the 1930's by FDR. This program was instituted during the Great Depression as a way to help workers get by after they retired. It was part of the New Deal social policy that was enacted during this time period. The program still exists today even if it is a hotly debated issue.

Not An Entitlement Program

The biggest misconception about social security is that it is an entitlement program. However, the American worker actually has a portion of each paycheck taken out in order to fund the system. This means that each worker who now gets social security has already paid for the benefits being received after retirement.

Does Social Security Help

Social security does help provide some income for seniors and those who are disabled. However, does it really make a difference in the economic status of those who receive payments? In 2011, the average social security recipient received around 1,200 dollars a month. A retiree who was getting only social security benefits would be around the poverty line. Most health care and funeral expenses are not covered by social security.

How Social Security Is Funded

Social security is funded partially by the American workers each time they are paid. That money is then supposed to be kept in different investments and trusts until it is time to reach the American worker. Employers also help foot the bill for social security by matching the amount that is withheld from any paycheck paid to an employee.

Social security may not make anyone rich but it still helps seniors get by. A little bit of money each month is better than nothing when you have to live on whatever you have. Social security should be respected for the help it provides to those who cannot work anymore and have paid for the right to collect those benefits. The social security program should be around for years to come to help future generations of retirees.
