Pediatric nurses work in many different settings. One of the places you can work is in a pediatrician's office. You will work with the doctor in making sure the child is comfortable and finding out what is wrong with them. You will be the first person the child sees, so you need to be prepared to face anything possible. Some children go to the doctor because they have a cold, and some have infections that need to be healed. When you see the child, you will take their temperature and talk to the parent to find out what is wrong with the child. Make note of anything abnormal you see so you can tell the doctor. After the doctor has seen the child, you will give the parent any prescriptions that the doctor has ordered and any instructions they need to follow.
Working in a hospital as a pediatric nurse is a little different. You will work on one floor in the hospital. Some hospitals have two separate floors for the infants and older children. Depending on what position is available, you may have a choice as to what floor you want to work on. Infants are completely different than working with older children. If you decide to work with infants, you will be responsible for feeding them in the nursery and bathing them. Some of the infants may need oxygen or other medical interventions before they can go home. Older children can talk to you and let you know what they need, but if they are in the hospital, it is usually because they are very sick. One of the leading causes for children being in hospitals is cancer. Other reasons include infections and dehydration. Starting salary is near $20 an hour.
