Teaching children about nutrition
Nutrition is an important part of good health and parents need to start teaching children healthy eating habits from a young age. It is never too late in a child's life to teach about healthy foods and eating a nutritious diet, so parents should encourage their children to understand fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other healthy alternatives to the processed foods that are readily available on the market.
One method of teaching children about nutrition is through a vegetable garden. Having children help grow healthy foods like strawberries, tomatoes, cabbage, artichokes and other fruits or vegetables gives them a foundation in the foods that are healthiest for the body. Parents can explain how the plants grow and the important food to keep the plants healthy. A lesson about feeding the plants can grow into an explanation of healthy food for the human body.
Beyond getting children actively involved in gardening, which helps them exercise and provides a learning environment for nutritious foods, parents should also take time to prepare healthy, home-cooked meals that hide the fruits and vegetables that children are unwilling to try. For example, hiding zucchini in muffins or grapefruit in a sorbet will provide a healthy meal that children enjoy eating while teaching them about the fruits and vegetables in the garden.
Healthy eating habits start at home and parents need to encourage children to learn about nutrition. Planting a garden and getting children involved in organic fruit and vegetable growing is a great way to start the lessons on healthy eating in a hands-on, fun environment.
