The Spray Gun
There is a bewildering array of spray guns on the market. For touch-up automotive painting, pre-canned spray paint works fine, while panel or custom work requires more advanced hardware. High-Volume Low-Pressure spray guns are quickly replacing conventional spray guns due to their conservation of paint (1/3 wasted v. 2/3 wasted). Electrostatic spray guns charge the atomized paint particles, causing them to evenly spread across the surface and cover hard-to-reach areas.
The Paint
Follow a simple rule: don’t screw around with paint:thinner ratios. Maladjustment may cause clogged nozzles, patchy coating or separated paint.
The Act
When auto painting, the spray gun should be held between 6-10 inches away from the surface. Panels should be smoothly and continuously painted side to side, top to bottom, with the spray angled so the unused mist lands in the unpainted area. Use multiple, thin coats.
Basic Effects
Metallic
The metallic effect is achieved by one of two ways: pre-canned metallic paint or added flakes. Metallic paint is typically pre-canned and inferior in quality to the flake method, as it cannot be misted on the surface like regular custom auto painting. Flakes are either “dusted” using a special brush onto the final paint layer or mixed with the lacquer.
Stripes
Tape the stripe’s edges so no paint can leak. Lightly spray the stripe in the direction of the panel. After finishing, slowly remove the tape.
Fading
There are two ways to create a fade effect. The first is to paint one color at one end, one color at the other, and then carefully fade them together by executing fast, quick strokes at the center. The second method is to create a 50/50 mix and spray that in the center of the two colors.
Auto body painting is about creativity. With these tips, any grandiose work of art is guaranteed to remain impressive, come wind, rain, or irritating lacquer coat.
