The testicles are suspended in the scrotal sac.
IndicationsTesticular torsion occurs when the testicle, normally attached to the scrotum by a small ligament at its base, becomes loose. The testicle can then twist on itself, cutting off its flow of blood. Testicular torsion is considered an emergency. Surgery is usually required, and it should be performed within about 5 hours from the onset of symptoms to save the testicle.
ProcedureGeneral anesthesia is used and the patient is deep asleep and pain-free. An incision is made in the scrotum, the testicle is uncoiled, and an absorbable suture is placed to secure the testis from rotating again. The unaffected testicle is also secured by suture because the problem tends to occur on both sides and the unaffected side is at increased risk for torsion at a later date.
ResultsAfter surgery, ice packs are applied to relieve pain and swelling. A scrotal support may have to be worn for a week after surgery. Normal activity may be resumed gradually.

A mangonel is the perfect example of a torsion engine. The drive provided to this ancient catapult comes from a mass of twisted ropes which create torsion and when released provide the energy required to hurl whatever it is you wish.

It is very important to find the shear center for the beams or sections that are undergoing majority of the load under torsion or twisting then the material will not fail under torsion as at shear centre there will be no effect of torsion or twisting. It will fail only by bending or any other force.
The medical term for twisting of the spermatic cord is testicular torsion. It is considered a medical emergency because it can result in decreased blood flow to the testicle and lead to tissue damage if not treated promptly. Symptoms include sudden onset of severe testicular pain and swelling.
Testicular torsion most commonly occurs in teenagers and young adults. The risk does decrease as the person ages, but this is because testicular torsion usually occurs during exercise and young men tend to exercise more than other age groups.
