Dry eyes occur when the body does not produce enough tears to effectively wet the eyes, or when the contents of these tears is lacking. The problem may lie in the amount of tears produced, or the tear composition itself.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is the medical term for not being able to produce enough tears. This condition can occur when an individual has sustained damage to his or her tear glands from radiation or inflammation. In addition, Individuals who have undergone laser or refractive eye surgery sometimes experience temporary dry eye issues as a result of the procedure. Those who have Diabetes, thyroid disorders, a deficiency of vitamin A, and other medical conditions may also be prone to reduced tears and dry eyes.

People who are 50 years or older may experience dry eyes as a natural result of lessened tear production. Postmenopausal women are also prone to dry eyes because of altered hormones.

Tears consist of three main ingredients - oil, water and mucus. Oil is produced on the outside of the tear in order to make the tear smooth and prevent the water from evaporating too quickly. Tears that do not contain enough oil will cause the water in the tear to evaporate prematurely, which dries out the eyes. A lack of oil often occurs when meibomian glands become clogged, usually due to eyelid inflammation or rosacea.

The middle of the tear is comprised of water with a touch of salt, which disposes of particles and other irritants that do not belong in the eye. If the eye does not excrete enough water, the layers of oil and mucus within the tear can mix and result in an unpleasant stringy discharge.

The final tear layer, mucus, forms on the inside of the eye, and aids in spreading an even amount of tear over the eyes. When the eye does not produce enough mucus to thoroughly cover its surface, the cornea can be afflicted with dry spots.

Whether the cause of dry eyes stems from a diminished tear production or a missing tear ingredient, treatments such as antibiotics, prescription eyedrops, and eye inserts are available to help combat the issue.
