There is no doubt that sewer work can become extremely dangerous for the men and women who have a sewer job. It is especially dangerous when the sewer worker must go to the depths of the sewage system in order to perform various sewer maintenance jobs. There are many different dangers that lurk in the sewers. The dangers of sewage work include oxygen shortage, gas explosions and hydrogen sulfide poisoning.

Oxygen Shortage

The lack of oxygen in the sewage system is something that happens more often than not. Once sewage begins to decompose, it will release methane into the air. Methane normally is not a problem in minute amounts. However, the main problem is the fact that methane can gather in the manhole and push oxygen out of the sewer. The lack of oxygen can cause sewage workers to faint or feel light headed. This could potentially lead to injury.

Gas Explosions

Methane does more than force oxygen out of the area. It is an explosive gas, which is dangerous. Unfortunately, methane is not the only explosive gas that is found in sewage systems. However, it is the most common explosive gas. Since there are multiple types of explosive gas in the sewers, it only takes a small flame to cause a series of explosions.

Hydrogen Sulfide Poisoning

As if explosions and a lack of oxygen were not enough, hydrogen sulfide poisoning is another danger of performing sewage work. Although hydrogen sulfide is not explosive like methane, it is still just as dangerous. Once sewage has been left standing for a certain amount of time, it will begin to generate hydrogen sulfide in addition to methane.

The mass of hydrogen sulfide is more than the mass of air. Because of this, sewage workers normally do not breathe in the gas. However, moving sewage can cause the hydrogen sulfide to move higher in the air and reach the sewage worker's nose. Once the hydrogen sulfide reaches three hundred ppm, the gas paralyzes a person's olfactory nerve. This means the sewage worker will not be able to smell anything. Once the hydrogen sulfide reaches six hundred ppm, the sewage worker's lungs will be paralyzed.
