Different Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes, whether type 1 or type 2, is a serious chronic condition involving the body's inability to process glucose in the blood. If undetected, it can lead to other complications. Recognizing the early warning signs is vital to prompt diagnosis and proper treatment.

The Three P's

The three most common symptoms of both type 1 and 2 diabetes are polyuria, polydipsia, and polyphagia, all of which are caused by an increase in blood sugar levels. Polyuria is experienced with a person has more frequent trips to the bathroom to urinate. Polydipsia is an increase in hunger, caused by the body's inability to process the nutrition which is ingested. Polyphagia is defined by a marked increase in the consumption of liquids, due to an insatiable thirst.

Type 1 Diabetes

Symptoms which occur with type 1 diabetes most often occur very swiftly. Most individuals are diagnosed when visiting the doctor or emergency room for severe presentation of their symptoms.

Type 2 Diabetes

Since type 2 diabetes has a much slower onset then type 1 diabetes, this form can sometimes go undetected for several years. Many times the symptoms are associated with other conditions by the individual. Many times it is diagnosed through routine testing.

No matter from which type of diabetes an individual suffers, a prompt diagnosis is essential. Recognizing diabetes as early as possible can help to prevent the serious complications which are often associated with the disease, such as blindness and amputation.
