The Facts About LED TV's

With all the hype surrounding LED TVs, is it any wonder that people are confused about what they are? There have even been cases of salesmen and marketing representatives telling a customer incorrectly what an LED television was. They should certainly know better, as they are “the experts.” So here are some basic facts to help you out before you talk to the salesmen:

1. The LED designation is talking about the backlight system being used in the new LCD TV models. As the LCD pixels and chips do not produce their own light, they have to be backlit for us to see a picture.

2. LED TVs are still LCD TVs. Perhaps a better designation for them would have been LCD/LED TV

3. There are two different ways the backlight system can work. One is caught to edge lighting where the backlights are on the edges of the TV and the light disperses to the center. The problem with the edge to lighting system is the outside of the picture can be brighter than the center. The other backlighting system is called a full array, which creates a more even a picture.

4. LED TVs using the edge backlight system can be made much thinner than the full array LED TVs.

5. Not all LED TVs are created equal. Many companies are using white LED backlight systems which do not offer as good color as the Red, Green, Blue (RGB) alternatives.

Some of the benefits of LED TVs are lower power consumption, no Mercury is used as opposed to other LED technologies, and a better color saturation. LED technology is new to LCD TVs and has brought the LCD TV performance up to the standard of plasma TVs. The downside to this is that since LED technology is new, it is subsequently more expensive that the non LED backlight LCD TVs. Because the prices of the RGB LED backlight are still so high, these will probably not be commonly found for another year or two.

Current buzz says that the prices of LED TVs are going to start becoming more competitive with comparable sets.
