There are many heart arrhythmias that can develop for several various reasons, most are nonlife-threatening however there are some that can progress into more serious situations.

An arrhythmia, also called dysrhythmia, is characterized by an irregular beat. When the heart is beating faster than normal it is called tachycardia, and too slowly is bradycardia. Premature contractions can feel like a skipped beat or a fluttering sensation to the individual experiencing them, these are usually harmless and require no treatment. There is also a totally uncoordinated mixture of heart movements referred to as fibrillation which can be fatal. The importance of the heart beating in a controlled, regular manner is that it enables the heart to pump the blood throughout the body. The heart functions by allowing the four chambers to fill with blood at the appropriate time, then triggering a valve release and forcing the blood into the next corresponding structure whether it is another chamber, artery, or vein. If the heart is not beating normally it can compromise the ability of the heart to pump the blood.

Problems with the structures of the heart, including the sources of conduction, chamber walls, and valves can lead to arrhythmia problems. When related to physical abnormalities, it is usually as the result of congenital defects or trauma, but can be due to elevated blood pressure either pulmonary or cardiac, and it may also be due to conditions of the coronary arteries and veins.

Many medications both prescribed and over-the-counter are capable of inducing irregular heart functions. Some foods and herbs can also create an imbalance of blood chemistries which prohibits the heart from keeping a steady beat. Anemia, pregnancy, fever, dehydration, and other temporary changes to the body can bring about a dysrhythmic condition. This is also the symptom of other health issues, as seen with hypothyroid function, and other diseases.

There are many ways that heart arrhythmias are addressed. Each therapy is catered to the needs and symptoms of the individual being treated. Medications, supplements, and occasionally surgical intervention with the placement of a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator are all used by cardiologists to correct the problem. A cardiologist may also use a procedure called catheter ablation to directly find and treat the cardiac tissue with conduction issues. These are just a few recommendations a cardiologist may offer.
