They will be the only person in the room who knows if the person they are defending is guilty or not, save for the victim; even if a person is guilty, they need to tell the defense attorney this so that they can have a basic strategy to win. Knowing that the person is guilty, the defense is required to try as hard as they can to have the charges dropped or to get the person acquitted.
