The tree surgery industry is not flashy, high profile, or even all that well known. There are no popular television shows that revolve around the lives of those who perform tree surgery and not many children say they want to become a tree surgeon when they grow up. But this seems to be the fate of most good things in the world and tree surgery is no exception.
Tree surgery is said to be the brain child of John Davey. Davey was a master agriculturalist who focused his attentions on the care and preservation of trees. In the mid 1870s, Davey traveled from England to America in to set up his practice. It was in 1880 that he founded the still thriving company called The Davey Tree Expert Company. He developed most of the techniques used by tree surgeons today which is why he is regarded as the father of tree science.
Davey established that the main aim of a tree surgeon is to preserve trees and prevent them from decaying due to damage or disease. There are many methods tree surgeons employ, some of which are filling in any cavities a tree might have, properly pruning trees regularly, and bracing and cabling trees that are damaged, or to prevent them from becoming so due to heavy storms. Tree surgeons also check for dead wood, cracked branches, and splits.
Tree surgeons have to be very well trained because tree surgery involves working with each and every part of a tree. Tree surgery is also an extremely physically demanding profession due to the fact that tree surgeons need to be able to climb trees and handle a chainsaw to cut large branches among other things. Also, all tasks are performed regardless of weather conditions. In fact, weather conditions and seasons are what dictate which tasks need to be performed on most trees. For example, trees are tidied up and strengthened in the summer months while the winter months are for milling timber and getting rid of trees that were lost in the summer.
As concern for the environment grows, so does the demand for tree surgeons. More and more people want to preserve and treat their damaged trees rather than just cutting them down all together. Tree surgery has been an essential industry for over 130 years and is continuing to thrive.
