When considering resume layouts, you need to try to find the most effective one that you can. In essence, your resume is your chance to pitch yourself to an employer. You want that pitch to be as strong as possible, regardless of what you have accomplished, what you have done in terms of your education, and how qualified you are. A great resume can get you a job over someone else who is more qualified if they have put together a poor resume that does not showcase their talents properly.

One thing that effective resume layouts all contain is a good heading section at the top. You may want to use a single point of color at the top if your whole resume is in black and white. Too much color can be overwhelming, but a picture that contains red or green or another distinctive color can really make your resume stand out in the pile. The heading should also provide your name and your contact information. Putting it at the top makes it easier for people to go back through the pile and find your resume at the end.

All good layouts will have multiple sections. Do not just put a big list of accomplishments. You need to break them down based on where they occurred or what they represent. For example, perhaps you graduated from high school, went to college, and got a bachelor's degree. That should be in a separate section from your experience actually working in the field. You may want to put your educational background first, and then follow it with your work experience. That is the most logical since most people go to college before they begin to work.

As much as possible, the layout should make use of lists, tables, and other things that can reduce the amount of words that you need to use. Your goal should be to say as much as you can in one page. Full sentences often do not accomplish this. You still need to make sure that it all makes sense, but you should reduce the amount of words that you use in order to fit more information on the page.
