To this date there has been no proven method for permanent hair removal. There are procedures that can impede or dramatically slow hair growth, but eventually the hair will return. The best you can hope for is a longer time between hair removal attempts.

The Strength of Hair Follicles

Permanent hair removal is so difficult because human hair follicles are so strong. Hair growth is one of the fundamental survival skills that the human body has relied upon for centuries. Since it is such an embedded part of the body’s design, it is very hard to reverse it. Hair follicles have a unique ability to regenerate, even after they have been severely damaged. Any product that claims to provide permanent hair removal is promising something it can’t deliver.

Laser Hair Treatment

The closest thing to permanent hair removal that you can find is laser hair treatment. This medical procedure uses a strong laser to damage hair follicles underneath the skin. In a successful treatment, the hair will not grow back again for about a year. You need to revisit the clinic for follow-up treatments to maintain the initial hair loss results. The hair that does grow back will be thinner than the original hair, which makes it easier to remove the hair during subsequent treatments. Laser hair treatment only works well if you have light skin and dark hair, however, so it is not a universal hair removal option.

Other Options That Remove Hair for Long Periods of Time

If you are not a good candidate for laser hair treatment, there are a couple of other options that will keep the hair away longer than regular shaving. Using hot wax to remove hair by the roots can leave you with smooth skin for weeks, although it is a relatively painful experience. The wax is applied to the unwanted hair, then allowed to cool before it pulled off. When the wax comes away from the skin, it pulls the hair with it. Depilatory creams are less painful to use, but they don’t last as long as waxing. If you use a cream it will dissolve the unwanted hair above and below the skin.
