So you’re thinking about joining the Coast Guard. You like the idea of protecting America’s coastline from invaders, drugs and illegal immigrants, and search and rescue missions are the height of heroism to you. You want to be a part of it.

The first step in achieving this goal is to take the ASVAB, a skills-assessment test that will point out your strengths and weaknesses. Your score will determine what military jobs you’re eligible for. You can access ASVAB practice tests as well as a full explanation of the ASVAB’s purpose online at www.military.com/ASVAB.

Then you need to see a Coast Guard recruiter. He’ll be able to answer your questions, help you to decide if his branch of the military is right for you and get you where you want to be.

This is the time to be assertive. Ask questions. Coast Guard recruiters want you to join. It’s their job to sweeten the pot enough to get you in the door, because the military needs people, now more than ever. This crucial step is what will get you the job you want, the bonus you want and the location you want.

Get the job. Whether or not you get the job you want will depend upon your test scores. If you did really well, the field is open to you. Tell the military recruiters that you’re interested in this particular job - whether it’s being a mechanic, working in housing or being a yeoman - and ask how you can be assured of getting that position.

Get the money. The military doesn’t have any leeway when it comes to salary. You get paid what your level gets paid, and that’s it. However, base pay differs from state to state in order to meet the cost of living in that state. Also, you may qualify for a sign-on bonus. Ask questions about the bonus: how much the military is currently offering, when you’ll get it and whether or not it will be a lump sum. Bonuses are generally split up over several years of your enlistment and are taxed quite heavily. Find out about this first so you’re not surprised.

Get the location. Have you always dreamed of going to California? Get it in writing. If the recruiter is serious about getting you in - and, unless your scores were bad, he is - he’ll work with you.

There really is no right awnser for this questions, when the soldier cam home depended on which unit the served with and what front (pacific or europe). Are there any enlistment bounses for signing on for a 6-year term for the Coast Guard?

Generally there is a bonus for enlistment. I have no idea if there is right now if there is. The best place to look or to ask questions is a Coast Guard Recruiter. Unlike the other armed services if you are apprehensive of joining a CG Recruiter will "NOT" hassle you. It is the only service that the recruiters wait for you to make the decision instead of calling every day and stopping by your work or home to pressure you to join. So, there is no pressure in calling and asking. The Coast Guard "ONLY" wants people that are really interested!

It takes pride in taking the lead role to provide homeland security and is one of the nation’s five armed services. If you want each day to be different, challenging, promising, and adventurous find the recruiter near you for more information on how to be part of the Coast Guard team. Becoming a recruiter is one of the best careers in the Coast Guard. You may apply as civilian, military personnel, or a volunteer. The U.S Coast Guard’s jobs are divided into five divisions: enlisted careers, officer careers, reserve careers, auxiliary careers and civilian careers. All 50 states have a recruiting office. The recruiters help guide you into the right career path. They have all the answers to your question. Visit them either in person or communicate through email, live chat or phone call. A recruiter is selected from one of the divisions and provides information on specific career option. To become a recruiter one has to go through the Coast Guard Academy, intensive training and pass required tests, serve either as an active duty or reserve, and enlist for either 8 years or 4 years. It is also a commissioned work and could be a full time officer job. Recruiters have to enter for boot camp, attend basic instructional training, and earn apprenticeship rank. A recruiter provides a prospective guard with the enlistment process and job selection. He or she is equipped to provide information on topics such as pay, housing, education program, job training, assignments, promotion, medical care, morale, and welfare and recreation activities. Recruiters do a lot of traveling work as well. They go to high schools, campus fairs, or city authorized meetings to promote and recruit. They set up booths with pamphlets and brochures, contact sheets and prizes to gain interest. They can be available by appointment or you can walk in to their offices. They do put in a lot of work and are extremely busy but they always have time for you.

How do you switch from air National Guard to active duty?

Have the regular Army recruiter help you fill out a DD368. Give the DD368 to your chain of command to sign. Bear in mind your Natioanl Guard does not have to sign the DD368 if the don't want to. Normally a unit commander will sign a DD368 without a problem. However, if your unit is preparing to deploy your commander may not sign off. Also, if your commander is concerned that you are a knucklehead, he might not sign. A transfer to another component is a priviledge, not a right.
