Many people think that a funny costume means a funny character or personality. Others think that a representation of a funny character or person, with a bit of extra tossed in, equals a funny costume. Sometimes that might work, but, more often than not, it goes over like a lead balloon.

The truth is, the funniest costume usually comes from the head, not from a costume store. It's more a result of a creative mind than of a designed costume with all the details perfect. In fact, if the details are off a bit, the result is a whole lot funnier!

For example, a Charlie Chaplin on a guy is funny. A Charlie Chaplin costume on a female is much funnier! The incongruity of facial hair on a female is much funnier than on a male. Conversely, a male wearing female attire is much funnier that a female wearing a costume of a female personality. It's even funnier if the guy has facial hair.

An everyday object is always a hoot if it's an unusual item. For example, dressing up as a battery is clever, but is it funny? On the other hand, wrapping a string of light green balloons around your body, to be a bunch of wine grapes, is very funny, and creative! The former, if done properly, with a funny brand name, would be much better than with a standard brand name. The latter requires little work and expense. Yet, the effect is instantaneous.

For a more elaborate costume, attaching various pieces of trash and debris to a sweat suit becomes an instant trash pile. To be effective, it would have to be a costume consisting of many items to affect the illusion accurately. Other guests at the party may try to either add trash to your "pile", or take some off. Either way, your costume will be fun and you'll have a much better time than the guy dressed like Abe Lincoln or even Chuckles the clown.

The key is to be creative and unexpected. A person wearing a black costume with a white stripe will make a great paved highway. Add a painted-over stuffed dead animal and the costume becomes a riot!
