When was the last time you had a class discussion in your virtual classroom? How did you do? Depending on the course, it can be a bit of a challenge to participate and manage online class discussions each week due to the number of required postings. There are three actions that can help you get a good grade in that specific area. They are the following: (a) getting organized; (b) participating early; and (c) responding to classmates.
Plan Ahead and Get Organized
The first action is to make sure that you plan ahead and get organized. This means that you have your planner or have written down due dates on your calendar whether it be an electronic or physical calendar. Often times, online classrooms are designed to have a master assignment calendar that has all of the due dates for both class discussions and any other assignment that may be due for the slated week. When class assignment due dates are posted in the classroom, then instructors are very adamant about students meeting those deadlines, regardless of a personal or family emergency, because they can plan ahead accordingly.
Participate Early in the Week
Participating in class is already important, but definitely when it comes to class discussions. Thus, the second action is to make sure that individuals are participating early in the week to ensure that they meet the requirements for themselves, but to also allow their classmates to meet their requirements of responding to other classmates’ postings as well. Not only does this provides timely learning opportunities in class, it also frees up time for individuals to meet other familial, work, or even personal obligations.
Respond to Classmates
The third action is to make sure that individuals respond to other classmates’ postings. For example, if at least three students participate early in the week, then this means that the instructor is able to provide detailed responses back to these students. Also, it means that other classmates’ will be able to meet the requirement of responding to at least two classmates. Each class discussion is weighed heavily and students who do not submit their own main discussion board posting and/or respond to classmates are losing a great deal of points each week that cannot be made up.
Online class discussions can be managed and these are three actions that can be taken to ensure that individuals have a rich learning experience while attending online classes.

Auditing a class means attending lectures and participating in discussions without receiving a grade or credit. It differs from taking a class for credit because in the latter, students are required to complete assignments, exams, and earn a grade that contributes to their academic record.
