The entire purpose of going to college is to come out on the other side as a success in some respect. Greek organizations help to make this happen for you. These micro communities on your college campus have a network of connections that you can use to your own advantage. Alumni and currently enrolled members have established themselves in your local community, in regional and national arenas, and sometimes in globally markets. Without Greeks, your ability to secure contact information and form relationships with powerful people in your industry would much less impressive without tons of footwork by you. No, this does not mean that everyone that joins Greek life will abruptly move up the ladder or quickly get hired on at a great company. The successfulness of your experience depends heavily on your participation and actual connections members have.

Pair up with a mentor within your Panhellenic group to get guidance on securing goals to make them come true. Keep your name current on any listings of members within a regional area of the country. People in your area can be the windfall of good fortune you need when moving to a new city where you know no one and could use resources to relocate. Pop culture has unfortunately stereotyped fraternities and sororities for us as the most toxic places to be in college with their wild and obnoxious partying. True, letting your hair down is in order every now and again when you are a student. Taking time out to relieve stress at the sorority house of your sisters on a “never miss schedule” is not a bad thing but there is surely more to Greeks than having a very awesome time of historic proportions. A fraternity or sorority will assist you in the area of personal development. Within the group, leadership roles are highly sought after and respected internally and in the outside community. These responsibilities are directly transferrable in your career as a graduate. Other than high office positions, fraternities and sororities often hold workshops for learning new skills that they realize are profitable in your vocational field.

Civic Leadership and Obligation

The day after an all night-er, Greeks commonly take to the streets of their city or town to raise funds and awareness for their group’s cause or purpose. This is area of Panhellenic life gets little coverage but is one way to choose which group you will join. If you have a personal emplacement with charitable organizations that you would like to support, pick a Greek to pledge that takes the cause as their call to duty. Again, charity work is an actual accomplishment to list when working on your curriculum vitae. The fun you will have and the bonds you will form will be just as valuable as the work you are doing to improve the lives of others. It is not very hard to name the superficial ways that a fraternity or sorority can make college better for you socially but sometimes it is not easy to figure out what a Greek organization actually does that is measureable and worthwhile. Each of the reasons shared here are great starting points for deciding on which membership you will pursue. Choose one that speaks to who you are or are becoming and validates the campaigns and entities that you are interested as you build affirmations you can count on when college is over.
