Thinking about getting a doctorate? Depending on your career years, you will need to figure out a specific topic in which you desire to study for your research project called a dissertation. There are three major milestones that you should become familiar with in the dissertation process. These milestones are the following:
1. Topic Development: This is the very first step of the process. During this milestone, individuals are expected to select a topic that will be feasible to conduct a research study to solve a problem or gain better understanding of a particular complex situation. For example, individuals must conduct a literature review to see if there are enough studies to continue with the topic. Also, individuals need to check the research findings to deem what aspect of the topic should be investigated further. During this stage, you will also craft at least three to four research questions and select an appropriate research design to answer your research questions. The last steps in this milestone are to seek topic approval from the Dissertation mentor and other appropriate departments.
2. Proposal: The second milestone is to work on your proposal. During this milestone, you will fine-tune chapters one, two and three of your dissertation. During this time, individuals will also complete their Institutional Review Board (IRB) application to submit to the IRB Committee for approval. Prior to this review, the Dissertation Committee has to approve as well. This may vary depending on the University’s policies. After the IRB committee has approved the researcher’s proposal, he or she can begin data collection.
3. Data Collection and Discussion: In the last milestone, individuals will be engaged in data collection and data analysis. This process can take anywhere from three months to a year or more. This depends on what was submitted and approved in the IRB proposal. Each of these tasks is considered to be written in Chapter four. The last step of this milestone is to prepare Chapter five, which discusses the findings for this particular study.
The bottom line is that each of these milestones must be approved and successfully completed to satisfy requirements to graduate from his or her doctoral program.
