Thinking about getting a doctorate? Depending on your career years, you will need to figure out a specific topic in which you desire to study for your research project called a dissertation. There are three major milestones that you should become familiar with in the dissertation process. These milestones are the following:

1. Topic Development: This is the very first step of the process. During this milestone, individuals are expected to select a topic that will be feasible to conduct a research study to solve a problem or gain better understanding of a particular complex situation. For example, individuals must conduct a literature review to see if there are enough studies to continue with the topic. Also, individuals need to check the research findings to deem what aspect of the topic should be investigated further. During this stage, you will also craft at least three to four research questions and select an appropriate research design to answer your research questions. The last steps in this milestone are to seek topic approval from the Dissertation mentor and other appropriate departments.

2. Proposal: The second milestone is to work on your proposal. During this milestone, you will fine-tune chapters one, two and three of your dissertation. During this time, individuals will also complete their Institutional Review Board (IRB) application to submit to the IRB Committee for approval. Prior to this review, the Dissertation Committee has to approve as well. This may vary depending on the University’s policies. After the IRB committee has approved the researcher’s proposal, he or she can begin data collection.

3. Data Collection and Discussion: In the last milestone, individuals will be engaged in data collection and data analysis. This process can take anywhere from three months to a year or more. This depends on what was submitted and approved in the IRB proposal. Each of these tasks is considered to be written in Chapter four. The last step of this milestone is to prepare Chapter five, which discusses the findings for this particular study.

The bottom line is that each of these milestones must be approved and successfully completed to satisfy requirements to graduate from his or her doctoral program.

Three Strategies on Handling Demanding Dissertation Students?

Working on a dissertation can be quite an experience for both learners and their dissertation mentors. There are three strategies that should be employed when working with demanding dissertation students who are trying to rush through the dissertation process. These three strategies are the following:Establishing Mentor and Mentee GuidelinesThe first strategy is to establish mentor and mentee guidelines. Most mentees will be working on their dissertation for the first time and truly do not know what to expect. Therefore, it is very important to have the mentees focus on understanding how the dissertation process works and what is expected of both them and their mentor. After reviewing this information, then it is encouraged for the mentee to reach out to his or her assigned mentor for any further clarifications. That way, there is common guideline so that both parties will be on the same page throughout the dissertation process.Keeping it ProfessionalThe second strategy is to keep it professional. It’s very important to establish a positive rapport with mentees, but it should not involve getting too personal with them or allowing them to get personal with you. For example, mentees should not be asking how many other mentees in which mentors work with. That is none of their business and should be deemed inappropriate. The focus should remain on the dissertation process at all times. That way, there is steady progress and the respect levels can remain professional. After all, after the mentee successfully completes the dissertation process, then he or she will become an expert in his or her field of study. This is a great strategy to model to him or her so that this can impact how he or she may mentor future doctoral learners, if he or she selects that academic route.Supporting Feedback with DocumentationThe third strategy is to support feedback with documentation. Depending on the mentee’s personality, he or she may think that his or her work is quality work and no revisions are necessary after a first or even second submission. Often times, learners will need a great deal of support with getting their work on the doctoral level. This is where supporting feedback with documentation becomes critical to their success. For example, when mentees do not want to revise their work, then submit it to the appropriate dissertation department at the specific college and let them provide detailed feedback. This strategy will definitely help doctoral learners that they need to improve and take the mentor’s direction to be successful. These are three strategies that can be used to handle demanding dissertation students as they learn the importance of respecting the dissertation process.
