Many schools are opting to implement home visits so that they can get to know students and their parents on a personal level. This is also an opportunity to become a staple within the community. There are three purposes of a home visit, which are the following:

Building a Connection

The first purpose of a home visit is to build a solid communication connection. There was always a challenge in Education to build a healthy school-home connection. Home visits are helpful to allow teachers to get an idea of the learner’s home environment. This information comes in handy to better understand how to help diverse learners. Also, home visits are important to help parents because they are able to ask questions that may not be addressed in a traditional setting.

Increasing Attendance

The second purpose of a home visit is to increase attendance. When students know that the teacher is coming to their house, they are going to make sure that they go to school on time because parents will be made alerted of their attendance. For example, parents are able to check the online portal to see if attendance has been recorded. This may also be an opportunity for the school to contact the parent immediately rather than sending out a written communication about tardies and/or attendance. Not to mention, students will make sure that homework is turned in on time to stay on a positive track to increase student achievement.

Increasing Student Achievement

The third purpose of a home visit is to increase student achievement. This is a great time to educate both parents and students about the expected standards. For example, state standards may have changed and / or state assessments may have changed. Often times, parents do not understand these changes and how they fit into their child’s education. This is also an opportunity to discuss the current progress of a learner’s academic situation.

Home visits are very important to ensure that students are focused and both the school and family are on the same page to enhance their child’s academic experience.
