Summer is a magical time of year. A time of year in which in seems like nature seems like it is encouraging us to go outside and play, or maybe that is just the happy remembrance of our childhood memories. No matter what the reason, it is a great time to get in some exercise. Unbothered by snow, or even a lot of rain, we can work out without hindrance. Except that is, for the heat. The heat may not seem like a big deal to you at first glance. After all if you had a dreadful winter where you live you’ve probably been dreaming about this. You’ve wanted the heat, but lets not forget that the heat can be more than a little bit dangerous if it is not properly managed. Or more to the point, if you are not properly managing yourself in the heat. So today, we are going to talk about some of the ways you can manage to beat the heat without giving up your work out regime. Get In The Water (or at least the AC) One great way to avoid heat related problems is to keep your body temperature down. Engaging in water sports, and exercising in an air-conditioned gym, are both great ways to help reduce your chances of overheating while working out. For those of you who already frequent the gym this will be no change at all. For outdoor exercisers it would be well worth looking for the community pool in your area. Keep Well Hydrated Whenever you work out you should be keeping yourself well hydrated. In the summer this is critical. You should start with some water in your system, and then add to it while you are out in the heat. About 8 ounces of water every 20 minutes you are out and about exercising is a solid guideline. That means you should be going through the equivalent of one disposable bottle every 40 minutes. Use water or a sports drink, nothing with caffeine as that can have a dehydrating effect on the human body. Work Out Earlier or Later By pushing your workouts to a time when the sun is not high in the sky you are getting the cooler parts of the day. Early morning, or early evening would both be good choices for workout times in the summer sun. Avoid late morning and the afternoon, as they are high heat times. And don’t forget the sunscreen. Remember, these strategies will help you to stay safe, but when in doubt you should not push yourself. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are not to be taken lightly. They can cause serious harm, and in some cases even death, so wary. If you experience the following signs get indoors, hydrate more and seek medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms: Headaches, Heavy sweating, Cold, moist skin, chills, Dizziness or fainting, Weak or rapid pulse, Muscle cramps, Fast, shallow breathing, Nausea, vomiting or both, Warm, dry skin with no sweating, Strong and rapid pulse, Confusion and/or unconsciousness, High fever, Throbbing headaches. Any of those can be a sign of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
