After spending hours driving along a beautiful coastline filled with majestic forests, the first impression you get of Thunder Bay might be a little off-putting. It is a concrete city filled with industrial relics. There are two distinct downtown areas that can be seen as kind of gritty. However, under its rough surface, Thunder Bay exhibits a nice small-town vibe.
For centuries, the Ojibwe tribe has called this area home. By the early 1800’s this area was primarily occupied by the British and used as a hub for trading. In the 1960’s a few of the neighboring towns merged together to form what is now known as Thunder Bay. The name is derived from the aboriginal word for the region, Animikie, which means thunder.
There aren’t a lot of attractions here, but it’s a great place to rest your head while exploring the neighboring areas. If you find yourself here on a layover, you might want to stay for awhile.
