Installing rain gutters along the top of a house may sometimes seem like a straightforward project, but there are small things to consider which could make a large difference in the future. Since the purpose of a rain gutter is to draw moisture away from the home to prevent damage, it is important to ensure that the gutters themselves are installed in a way to protect them from that same moisture.

Make sure that your fascia is in good condition before you begin installation. One common problem that can occur over the years is the rotting of the fascia behind the gutters. If this occurs, you will need to take the gutters down, replace the fascia, and then re-install the gutters,

Consider installing gutter guards. There are a few different types, but the main purpose of a gutter guard is to keep debris out of the track that might inhibit the flow of rainwater towards the downspout. They are relatively cheap and easy to install along with the gutter.

Remember to keep the gutters clean. A clogged rain gutter is completely useless and the water will just overflow. Check the gutters regularly for a heavy build up of debris. Use a hose, power washer, or even a broom to clean out the tracks.

Take time to consider where the downspout is depositing the water. A very large amount of water may come pouring out through the spout. Make sure that it is positioned so that the water will flow away from the foundation of the house. The downspout can sometimes guide the rainwater into undesirable locations that can cause problems over the years.

If you have a garden or a lawn, consider installing a rain barrel. This is a large barrel (usually plastic) which will attach to the middle of your downspout and divert water into the barrel. This is an excellent way to ensure that the water is not welling up around the foundations of the house. It will also save money on water bills since you will be able to water your lawn and garden with it.

When installing gutters, consider all of the options that are available to you and be aware of where the rainwater will be flowing at all times.
