Many parents find helping their children with homework to be a simple activity or task; however, others may find the process to be time-consuming and sometimes even overwhelming. The following tips can be followed to make the process a little easier for either type of parent.
Create a Homework-Friendly EnvironmentAll parents should have a spot in their home where the children can complete their homework. The space does not have to be large but it should be big enough so that a parent can sit down also and help the child if it is needed. The area should be concentration-friendly, meaning not a lot of stuff placed on the wall or desk area where the child will be sitting. Research has also shown playing soft instrumental music many times helps children to focus while completing their homework.
The homework space should also be in an area of the home where there is little traffic during homework time.
Break Times Should Be ProvidedShort breaks should be provided to the child if their homework takes more than 30 minutes to complete, but the breaks should not be over 10 minutes. Water breaks should not be permitted, as a bottle of water should be kept on the child's desk area; staying hydrated increases concentration and student productivity.
>Provide Each Child Their Own SpaceThere is nothing wrong with having children who have siblings to complete their homework at different times of the evening. However, if the children do complete their homework at the same time it should be completed in different areas, unless the homework involves group work. Siblings who complete their homework together within the same area often become a distraction to one another, and many times the siblings will ridicule the other siblings' efforts at completing their work.
Of course if there are toddlers within the household, homework time is a great chance to teach them to learn 'quiet rules' and sitting in one area of the house so they do not distract the children that are completing homework.
