Traditional rug weaving is an art form that requires skill, patience and ample time. A fine loom will place threads close together for a tight, full weave that will wear extremely well. Navajo rug weavers have practiced their art for centuries, first creating cotton garments and later working with the wool of sheep imported by the Spaniards.

The Mantas worn by Pueblo peoples were woven on looms and the Navajo had developed great skill by 1800. In the following century they developed Chief blankets, which were used for trading. Most of the blankets still in existence are in museum collections, highly valued for the quality of the work.

All genuine Navajo rugs are completely woven by hand. The skill is passed down from one generation to the next. First a child learns to clean the wool. Spinning is taught next, and finally weaving on a small loom. A Navajo weaver usually plans the designs and colors to incorporate in her head instead of following a written pattern.

Before weaving can begin, the selvedge is attached. After washing and carding the wool, the weaver spins yarn and often dyes it to her own specifications. Finally, the weaver sits or stands at the loom to weave a masterpiece.
