Typesetting is the process of setting or placing type to create printed texts, or digital texts. Today most typesetting is done by using special software on a computer or other digital device, even if the texts are going to be printed. Typesetters are typically responsible for setting type, designing the layout or following a design specification, proofing and correcting the document in cooperation with authors or editors, and may be responsible for seeing the document through the printing process. If a document is printed or uses text, chances are a typesetter was involved, whether it’s a book, a magazine, a newsletter or a greeting card.

There are several possible ways to become a typesetter, but all of them require a high school diploma or GED. One way is to earn a four year B.A. degree in graphic design, taking care to take classes and internships that emphasize typesetting and learning to use the specific software packages used in modern digital typesetting. Another route is to take the necessary classes to earn a certificate in typesetting from a local community college, art school or technical school. It’s also possible to master the software packages independently then serve an apprenticeship under an experienced senior typesetter.

Typesetters need to have a good eye for detail, advanced time management and organizational abilities, an understanding of the principles behind typography, layout and design, a high level of verbal and written communication skills, and be exceedingly adept with written English, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation. They need to be comfortable working in a collaborative environment with a shared workflow that may be high pressure and deadline-driven. Typesetters need to be comfortable working with a variety of software packages and digital devices, and able to quickly learn new software.

Even with a degree or certificate, most typesetters work under a senior professional for a year or two. Typesetters may work for corporations, book, newspaper and magazine publishers, design agencies or printing companies. Some typesetters invest in the equipment and software to become self-employed, working out of their own studios for multiple clients.
