Transitioning from Breastfeeding to Bottles

By: Jennifer Janes

If you have finally made the decision to bottle feed rather than breastfeed, the transition can sometimes be challenging. You and your child are very attached to one another, and this is sometimes more difficult than you think. Here are some tips of advice to get through the initial struggle.

Offer your baby a bottle before the scheduled time he or she would normally eat. This way your baby will take more interest in eating from the bottle. Sometimes when babies are overly hungry, a cold nipple could be frustrating to them; therefore, starting earlier than scheduled is a much more logical decision.

Let your spouse, child or someone else feed your baby the first bottle. If you try to give your baby a bottle, he or she will wonder why they are not getting your breast. This will confuse your child and probably make them upset.

Place some of your breast milk on the nipple. Once your baby tastes it, he or she will probably start sucking harder to get more from the bottle. If they baby starts to cry and stops drinking the bottle, continue to add more breast milk to the nipple.

Try and find a nipple that is similar in shape to the pacifier he or she uses. Bring your pacifier to the store and compare how it looks to how the nipples on bottles look. Later, you could even heat the nipple with warm water to see how they like it.

Let your baby to play with the nipple on the bottle. If your infant takes any interest at all to the bottle, that is a great sign. Take time and be patient, so that they will learn to like it.

Try to switch positions with the baby. Hold the baby facing toward you when he or she eats, or maybe even try placing them in a car seat. This way your infant will learn to understand that they are not breast feed when facing toward you.
