Anyone who has been inside a gym in the past ten years has seen an elliptical. It has become commonplace in almost any gym or fitness center and has become the most popular cardio exercise machine over the treadmill. There are several reasons for this. The first is because the person training will be able to workout their upper and lower body at the same time. This is meant in a cardiovascular sense, not in relation to strength training. Ellipticals are not to be used for strength training, although they can be used by those training for strength as a warm-up or to keep cardio capacity intact.

There have been many debates over the differences in calories burned between an elliptical and a treadmill. Some have stated that one will burn more calories on an elliptical because they’re using more body parts. The truth is that it evens out because the person exercising is not lifting their feet. Based on scientific studies, the calorie count is about the same. That doesn’t mean ellipticals can’t be more beneficial. Just as treadmills offer less wear and tear on the knees than running or jogging outside, ellipticals offer less wear and tear on the knees than running or jogging on treadmills. This is because there is no constant pounding.

Ellipticals can cost anywhere between $400 and $6,000. The cheaper versions are for the home and the more expensive ones are for commercial locations. The home models will only offer basic options in regards to settings. The models found in gyms will offer many more workout variations, which can be beneficial. If looking at it from an economic standpoint, and assuming the average gym membership will cost around $500 per year, unless someone is a diehard fitness fanatic, it would make more sense to purchase a home model. On the other hand, some people have trouble staying motivated, and the home has many distractions. If one feels as though working out at home could be challenging, then it would be wise to join a gym or fitness center instead. Either way, the heart is the most important muscle in the body, and ellipticals can help keep the heart in tiptop shape.
