So you want to go into teaching? There are a variety of degrees to choose from, depending on what and which level you want to teach. Here is an overview of the most common education degrees offered by colleges and universities.

Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching/Education (B.A./B.S.)

Students who have a high school diploma or GED are eligible to apply for a bachelor’s degree in teaching or in education. You can specialize in early childhood education, elementary education, or secondary education. Students take courses in pedagogy as well as content courses (i.e. math teachers take math classes). Most bachelor’s programs include some sort of student teaching/practicum component. After finishing the coursework, candidates will be required to complete state teacher certification (through a portfolio or exam) to be able to get a job teaching in a classroom.

Master’s Degree in Teaching/Education (M.A.T./M.Ed.)

Students with a bachelor’s degree in teaching/education can choose to go on to get a master’s degree in teaching/education. This advanced degree allows students to dig deeper into both content and pedagogy coursework. After completing coursework and any practicum requirements, candidates must complete a master’s exam or thesis (overseen by an advisor) or some sort of non-thesis work (research project, internship, special assignment). Teachers who have a M.A.T. or an M.Ed. are paid at a higher level than those with a B.A. or B.S.

Doctoral Teaching Degree (Ph.D./Ed D.)

Students who hold a M.A.T. or M.Ed. may wish to continue on to pursue doctoral studies. Doctoral programs typically require 15 post-master's classes, a comprehensive exam and a research-based dissertation (overseen by an advisor).

There are two types of doctoral degrees within the field of education, the doctorate in education Ed.D. and the doctor of philosophy in education Ph.D.

Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.)

Ed.D. programs are designed for teachers who are interested in becoming a university professor (teaching others how to teach) or an administrator (superintendent, principal, etc.). Ed.D. programs focus on research and application in professional practice.

Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Ph.D.)

Ph.D. programs are designed for students who wish to teach at the university level (the theory of education/pedagogy) or be a researcher in the field of education. Ph.D. programs are more focused on theoretical research Ed.D. programs.
