The pump sits underwater and uses electricity to move water upwards and into the irrigation system. Submersible irrigation pumps are effective and require very little maintenance after installation. The issues with submersible pumps are that they cannot service a large area like a centrifugal pump and they can overheat if the water around the motor does not keep moving.

One final option is a turbine irrigation pump. This is similar to a submersible pump since it has to sit in the water. The pump uses impellers to move water up. Turbine pumps are strong and can supply water to large irrigation systems. The two complications are installation and maintenance. Both installation and maintenance for turbine irrigation pumps are more complex than with other pumps.
