The U.S. Marshal’s office is the nation’s oldest and most diversified law enforcement agency. Founded in 1789, it maintains a tradition of excellence, honor, and service. These officers are hired by presidential appointment; one officer is appointed for each of the 94 judicial districts.

The duties of the U.S. Marshal are varied and complex. A primary objective is the responsibility for law enforcement duties in the federal court system. Protecting federal judges, attorneys, and witnesses in federal courts is a primary focus for the U.S. Marshal. Both ground and air transportation of federal prisoners falls to the U.S. Marshal.

Charged with conducting fugitive investigations, U.S. Marshals apprehend federal fugitives. Historically, this group has apprehended more fugitives than all other law enforcement agencies combined. They have developed close relationships with other law enforcement agencies and provide assistance and training to other agencies, both local and national agencies. This cooperation extends to other countries.

Deputy marshals make up the tactical unit of the service. They are strategically located throughout the United States and can easily respond to matters of homeland security or national emergencies.

An interesting aspect of the job is the duty to ensure the safety of witnesses testifying in federal courts. Witness protection is a complex, critical, and sometimes dangerous duty of the U.S. Marshal. Witness relocation is a demanding and exacting job.

To be considered for employment as a U.S. Marshal, the application must be between the ages of 21 and 36 years of age. A Bachelor’s degree or three years of experience is required, although a combination of education and experience may be considered. It is important to note that the experience need not be exclusively in law enforcement. The applicant must be in excellent physical condition and pass a physical examination and a thorough background check.

Selected applicants must undergo a 17 1/2 week training period in Glynco, GA. A total of 7 exams must be successfully completed. A beginning marshal’s salary is just under $42,000 annually. Retirement is offered after 25 years of service, regardless of age. With 20 years of service, the marshal can retire at age 50. Mandatory retirement for all marshals is 57.
