Contrary to popular belief, video game design is more than simply playing Video Games all of the time. Instead, it involves a lot of technical and creative skill. Having an idea for a game and breaking this idea down so that a game is divided into levels, characters, and a basic plot or focus takes time. After all, a lot goes into making a video game: everything from the graphics to the storyline has to be discussed, nevermind the marketing side of the process.

If you want to work in video game design, you need to really take the time to study this world. Not only do you need to know the different types of games that are available but you also need to know the technical side of the business: how games are created, what software and technology to use, and how to structure or organize the game using the latest consoles, among other things. Thus, you need to know just as much about the video game market and history as you do about the very piecing together or creation of the video game. This may mean studying gaming trends, attending conventions, and talking with gamers of all types.

If you have a degree or training in video game design, you can find a number of jobs. There are independent contractor jobs where companies bring you in to hear your ideas or to have you work on someone else’s title or game. There are also educational groups that may hire you to really work on games that teach students key concepts in a fun or new way. And of course, you could also apply to work for video game companies that want the brightest talents pitching new games and titles to them. Work hard and really get to know this industry and you will have a host of options when it comes time to look for a solid video game design job.
