There are many types of positions in warehouses - from general laborers to warehouse managers to maintenance personnel and many more in between. For some people, walking into a warehouse feels remarkably comfortable. Happily for those people, there are jobs to suit a variety of personality types and skill levels.

For people just getting started on a career path, working as a picker in a warehouse might be a great place to start. Pickers gather items from the warehouse to fill orders. A position as a laborer provides a chance to see how a warehouse operates and perhaps even offers a glimpse of what other types of positions are available to a person who would like to make warehouse work a career path.

There are some clerical positions that must be filled in a warehouse, as well. Paperwork must be completed and filed, phones must be answered. Some clerical positions require a high school diploma, but others may require an Associate’s Degree. There are fewer clerical jobs in warehouses than other positions, but they do ocassional become open.

The pay range for both general laborers and clerical jobs in warehouses is between minimum wage and $10-12 per hour, with clerical positions on the lower end of the scale.

For those with more advanced experience and/or education warehouses can offer some higher-paying options. Industrial Engineers are frequently in demand, as are salespeople and people with specialized computer software knowledge.

Warehouse workers often follow a path from entry level laborer to crew or shift manager to warehouse supervisor or distribution supervisor to warehouse manager or director of distribution. Along with practical experience, many positions within a warehouse require a Bachelor’s Degree and in some cases, an advanced degree is preferred.

The salaries for various positions within a warehouse tend to increase with the level of responsibility, although in some cases salespeople are able to command high pay through commission structures. A very general range for positions requiring a Bachelor’s Degree and some experience is between $35,000 and $80,000. There are far more opportunities to advance and succeed in a career in warehousing than many people realize.
