Technically, the surrender of Robert E. Lee was notduring a battle. On April 9, 1865, in the city of Appomattox Courthouse (yes, it was a city, NOT the name of a real courthouse), Lee and his army lied down their weapons and surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant.
