For example, a litigation attorney may question experts or medical doctors and perform depositions of corporate personnel in order to present evidence for his client's case. They may also prepare court pleadings and exhibits as well.

Ligation lawyers can also represent their clients outside the courtroom, in what's known as Alternative Dispute Resolution or Mediation. Using these methods, a client can avoid the expense and time of trial, and attempt to have the dispute resolved in a casual, private setting instead. The attorney can present their clients case to a neutral third party and have that person decide the outcome of the case.

Litigation lawyers will also provide direction, consultation and explanations of legal procedures to their clients, and help guide them through the process of the lawsuit. Some litigation attorneys offer free services to those who cannot afford legal representation.
