A lodging manager is an interesting job that many job seekers don’t think about, but which provides a great challenge to the right individual. While many lodges or high adventure vacation getaways are smaller and run by a business owner, there are also larger hotels or lodges where a manager is needed to handle reservations, see to the needs of guests, and make sure every department of the lodge is run both efficiently and profitably. A lodging manager is in charge of general staff and must make sure that guests have as positive a vacation experience as possible in order to encourage future business and build a solid reputation.

Some of the positives of this job are that they tend to be well paying, give invaluable management experience in managing both business and staff duties, allow workers to work with people, and the growth potential is huge. A person who proves to be an exceptional lodging manager at one level will get a shot at an even more ritzy establishment, and can move into the type of job that is easily six, if not seven, figures a year depending on how hard that person is willing to work.

There are some negatives to this job. A lodging manager can expect to work long hours, especially on weekends or when there is a special event going on. In addition, final responsibility when something goes wrong stops at the manager position, and that also means that when someone really screws up there’s a good chance that the manager is going to have to deal with very angry and yelling customers. Also, a dead end job as a lodging manager in a hotel that is in a bad location or just won’t be able to compete due to other circumstances can drag down the career path while causing a lot of stress.

While it is not at all necessary, the candidates who look best for a lodging manager job are ones who have completed college, especially with a degree in hospitality services or hotel management, and who also have previous hotel experience at any level. These candidates are going to look the best when applying for a lodging manager position.
